Shading, not security. Our roller shutters are a sun-control product — foam-filled aluminium slats that roll down the outside of the glass to manage heat, glare and light. They are not security-rated shutters, which is a different product available on request. Nothing here should be read as a claim that a roller shutter secures a home.
Llandudno’s homes are built into a steep granite hillside facing almost due west, which means the same wall of glass that frames the sunset takes the full force of the afternoon sun with nothing between it and the horizon. A roller shutter stops that heat and glare at the glass itself, rather than fighting it once it’s already inside the room.
Boxes and guides are specified in marine-grade coatings, not standard finishes, given how directly this coastline is exposed to spray. Motorisation is standard, with manual override and app, remote or schedule control, and we’re upfront that even coated hardware benefits from an occasional rinse this close to the water.
An exterior aluminium shutter stops sun and heat before they reach the glass, and it is priced as the structural product it is: R3,500 to R5,500 per square metre installed crank-operated, and R5,000 to R7,000 per square metre motorised, control and commissioning included. Wider openings, deeper boxes and insulated slat profiles sit at the upper end.
The fixing substrate and the detail above the opening are checked on site before anything is quoted, because a shutter puts real load into that wall. Read these as planning bands, not a quote. Small openings carry a minimum charge, since the hardware and the fitting labour hardly change with the window. Each of yours is costed by itself at the measure and confirmed on paper.
West-facing glazing is common across this stretch — from the exposed hillside runs above Bantry Bay to the cliffside apartments of Clifton, and the sheltered valley homes of Hout Bay and Camps Bay where a shutter suits a media room or holiday home left empty.
