Roller shutters for exposed granite-hillside glass

Interlocking aluminium slats that roll down the outside of the window from a headbox above — shading stopped before it ever reaches the glass, on the elevations that take the sun hardest.

An external roller shutter, lowered partway to take the last of the afternoon sun off the glass.

Shading, not security. Our roller shutters are a sun-control product — foam-filled aluminium slats that roll down the outside of the glass to manage heat, glare and light. They are not security-rated shutters, which is a different product available on request. Nothing here should be read as a claim that a roller shutter secures a home.

Llandudno’s homes are built into a steep granite hillside facing almost due west, which means the same wall of glass that frames the sunset takes the full force of the afternoon sun with nothing between it and the horizon. A roller shutter stops that heat and glare at the glass itself, rather than fighting it once it’s already inside the room.

What a roller shutter does well here

  • Heat kill on west-facing glass — closed fully or partway, the shutter blocks direct sun before it heats the room, useful on the hottest late-afternoon hours.
  • Full blackout — for a media room or a holiday home left empty, the closed slats give a total light seal that no interior blind can match.
  • Insulation and quiet — the closed curtain of air-filled slats damps both heat and the sound of wind and swell on an exposed elevation.

Built for salt and wind

Boxes and guides are specified in marine-grade coatings, not standard finishes, given how directly this coastline is exposed to spray. Motorisation is standard, with manual override and app, remote or schedule control, and we’re upfront that even coated hardware benefits from an occasional rinse this close to the water.

West-facing glazing is common across this stretch — from the exposed hillside runs above Bantry Bay to the cliffside apartments of Clifton, and the sheltered valley homes of Hout Bay and Camps Bay where a shutter suits a media room or holiday home left empty.
